What To Do When Tonsil Stones First Appear

by Mary O'Mally

Once you've discovered the little white things on your tonsils, it might be easier to think that if you leave them alone, they will just go away on their own! You might try gargling with salt water a few times and if you're lucky, they will disappear and you will not have to look further into how to remove tonsil stones (which is what they're called).

Tonsil stones may develop after a cold due to the fact that during this time, there is a lot of mucus going into your throat from your nose. This can go on for several months, depending on how long it takes to remove that excess mucus from your lungs. The mucus will start to pick up bacteria, and collect other things that could get stuck in the small areas of the tonsils. After a cold, gargling may be all you need to get rid of them.

Maybe you weren't sick though and now you have a sore throat -- in that case, you'll need to investigate further to see if it was caused by something else. Actually, it very well could be something you ate! Tonsils have little holes in them that can collect food and other small particles. When they are first forming, the particles are small and almost invisible to the naked eye.

As the tonsil stones get larger they will start to grab onto other things that you are eating and drinking. And, as time goes on the tonsil stones will get bigger and start to cause worse sore throats and bad breath. At this point, even though they're not dangerous to your health, you will want to figure out what you're doing, or could be doing to remove tonsil stones.

Like I said earlier, the bacteria will sometimes make tonsil stones grow no matter what you do. When this happens, you'll need to investigate what you are eating that could be making bacteria and mucus grow more quickly than before. You might find that if you stop drinking milk, and start eating yogurt it will help as a first step.

Hopefully now you know a few secrets to remove tonsil stones. Try the things I noted first: gargling with salt water twice a day, removing dairy from your diet, and eating yogurt (or taking a pill that has the active cultures in yogurt). If all of these fail to help, it's time to re-look at your diet to see what could be causing the bacteria to continue to form.
